Even though not many people think of fitness as a skill, they most defiently should!
What is a skill if not the ability to complete a task, and what is fitness if not exactly that?
Being able to do a pushup or a pull-up is not much different in theory than being able to rip a guitar solo, or play a piece on the piano. Both activities require the use of repetition and resistance (challenging yourself to make it harder)
The only difference is the kind of skill, either way, neither activity is less a skill than the other.
A big reason people never reach their fitness goals is that they dont think of fitness as a skill they think of fitness as a habit or routine. Building habits is important for building your skill base it’s not enough to just get into the routine of doing something without also finding a way to progress within that routine.
Imagine you’re a gym instructor. Today is the first day of gym class so there are a few things you need to get across to your class.
First and foremost the class needs to understand that fitness is no different than music or math class, all they are doing is learning a new skill. But instead of learning chords or an algebra equation, you’re learning the skill of pull-ups, squats, and any other exercise you can think of.
Fitness is considered a skill because you get better at what you practice. In the industry, we use the term SAID (specific adaptations to an imposed demand) You practice you get better.
Fitness is a collection of skills that the more you practice the better you get. Like everything else in life.
So if you’re intimidated by the gym, dont know where to start, think your never good at it or to out of shape to get good at it through all those fears to the side.
Fitness is a skill anyone can learn and anyone can get better at, you just need to practice.
