Today’s society is obsessed with weight. It seems that the majority of people step on the scale and are unhappy with the number they see there. So, they set a goal to lose X pounds in order to reach their ideal weight. Let’s face it- that is all that weight really is: a number on a scale. Without any other information, this number is essentially worthless.
Why is Body Weight Useless?
You could have two people of the same gender who are exactly the same height and weight, but these people look completely different.
So what exactly is the difference? It is simple: the difference is body composition.
Body composition is a measure of the amount of different types of tissue in the body. The body is made up of four basic components:
1) Fat 2) Muscle 3) Bone 4) Water
Body weight alone cannot tell us whether or not a person is healthy. They could have a lot of muscle (and very little fat) and therefore weigh a lot.
This is why I say that we need to emphasize performance and body composition changes rather than weight loss. People who want only to change the number on the scale can often end up doing more damage to themselves than good.
The best way to achieve optimal body composition is to focus on your performance in the gym. In order for you to get stronger, faster, quicker, and more agile you need to build a body that can perform at its highest peak.
So let’s flip the script on weight loss. Focus on your performance and get better every single day. Pushing yourself will not only crush gym goals but you’ll be buying yourself a new wardrobe in no time!
