“After 2 major knee surgeries, it was the first time in my life I felt out of shape and needed a goal”.
Before joining Club Sweat, life for Cody was really good. Cody works as a registered fire technician while being part of the management team at his wife’s family’s small business. When Cody isn’t working you can find him playing dodgeball in the winter and Men’s league LMBA 18+ hardball in the summer. He also enjoys taking on home renovation jobs that can be quite physical.
Although Cody has a great career and an amazing family his mindset just wasn’t where it needed to be after recovering from two major knee surgeries. He was pretty bummed out over his injuries and instead of doing anything to make it better he just complained about it and felt sorry for himself. “I blamed everything and everyone but myself, and it was a mistake.”
Deep down Cody had a goal to lose weight and get fit for 2 years prior to joining Club Sweat. But considering sports and fitness always came easy, he had a hard time getting himself into the right headspace to really want it. Watching Cody clear the turf in 3 leaps at Club Sweat makes his athleticism pretty apparent.
“Looking back I had people in my life telling me what I should and could be doing and trying to help me but I couldn’t see it, or maybe I just wasn’t ready to listen or even to hear it. I was always ready with some excuse as to why I wasn’t going to the gym anymore, or why I didn’t like physiotherapy, or whatever. The long and short of it is you have to make these kinds of life choices for yourself or you will fail.” Music to our ears. You have to want it for yourself!
After attending a family gathering at his in-laws, his wife’s great aunt who he barely knows looked at Cody and told him that he was “looking pretty fat”. Who knew a sweet little old lady could be so blunt and forthright? Clearly, she genuinely cared which really took Cody by surprise. “She was just showing concern for me and my health.” Cody told us she shook her finger at him like old ladies do, and said: “you really gotta watch that”. He was pretty shocked as it was super unexpected, but clearly, this opened up his eyes that “It was time to get it together. Time to stop being bummed out about my knee, man up, and do something about it.”
About 6 months ago Cody got it in his head that he needed to do something. He needed to make a change. After a little convincing from a particular little redhead and Club Sweat member Michele constantly talking about the gym and transforming her physique and life, did the trick!
Still, Cody didn’t know where to start. He set out by enrolling in the government’s weight loss “grant/challenge” and they set out a goal for him to lose 40lbs… overwhelming we know.
Cody made the call and then sat down and worked with his secret little weapon, coach Ash. The ultimate odd couple, with Ash being 4’9 and 100lbs soaking wet and Cody looking to lose 40% of Ash’s body weight, she helped him set up a plan to work through his fear of healthy eating and step by step they have worked together to achieve his initial goal.
Cody’s biggest accomplishment so far; not re-aggravating his injury. “Sounds weird I know but there is something invigorating about being able to constantly increase my weight every month without feeling like I’m at risk of injury.”
Although Cody might not know yet what his next goal is, he knows the future is bright! And the team at Club Sweat couldn’t agree more.
Cody, we sit back and just marvel at the insane amount of progress you have made in the last 6 months. We know that no matter what Cody does, he is going to be successful. Even if it means us buying more weight plates for you! lol
